Monitoring Clouded Leopard Population in Htamanthi Wildlife Sanctuary
The Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), also called the mainland clouded leopard, is a wild cat inhabiting dense forests from the foothills of the Himalayas through Northeast India and Bhutan to mainland Southeast Asia into South China. In Myanmar, Clouded Leopards are found Northern Sagaing Region and Kachin. We have been conducting scientific explorations regarding wildlife and wildland conservation for the establishment of new protected areas, the endangered species conservation and research program, reintroduction of globally threatened species into the wild after species recovery, technical and financial provision to protected area management like basic and advance wildlife management training, camera trap survey training, occupancy survey training, SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) patrol training in almost every year at the local and national level.
The clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) survey research, a biological monitoring program, has been conducting using camera traps in the Htamanthi Wildlife Sanctuary (HWS) since 2014. With the support of Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) (Oxford), the Nature and Wildlife Conservation Division (NWCD) of Forest Department and Wildlife Conservation Society (Myanmar Program) deployed 80 paired camera stations (160 camera traps) in the Nam Pa Gon and Nam E Zu management zone of the sanctuary for 90 days in each alternate year.
We Protected Clouded Leopard in Htamanthi Wildlife Sanctuary by protecting under law enforcement of NWCD and we support technically on SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool). And also, we conduct village awareness program on the Sanctuary surrounded villages and also conduct School programs to aware future generations.
