Fish Farm For Fish Resource Conservation
This report describes the outcomes of a project that aimed to enhance the fish resources and the conservation of Irrawaddy dolphins in the Irrawaddy dolphin protected area. The project was carried out by the Dolphin Community Conservation Association (DCCA) from January to May 2023. The main activity of the project was to establish fish farms near the villages of the DCCA members. The fish farms raised Nga Myit Chin (Labeo rohita or rohu) fish, a native species that is compatible with the dolphins. The fish farms were designed to allow the fish to migrate to the river when the water level was high enough. The project achieved a success rate of 70 % in releasing the fish from the farms to the river. The average size of the fish increased from 3 inches to 8 inches during the rearing period.
